Val Nice Orza was raised in Norwood and has always considered it home. When it came time to establish roots for her own family, Val, her husband Chris, and their two young children relocated in 2013, from New York City back home. They knew they would be welcomed to a community with excellent values, great schools, and an opportunity for growth.
Val is a graduate of St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English. During her time in college, Val was awarded the Dean’s List for academic excellence. She was a member of the Student Government Association. Also, she served as the President of the Music Association and had the honor of being the principle violinist of the St. Joseph’s College Orchestra.
As a former businesswoman, Val knows it is important to work hard. For several years, she operated a wedding retail business that saw national exposure in various media outlets such as Huffington Post, CNN, and Entertainment Tonight. Her work was also been featured in print in Contemporary Bride Magazine.
In order to be the change she wants to see in the world, Val is very involved in the community. In 2015, Val ran a tight race for Norwood City Council Ward 4 representative. She spent three years as a substitute teacher in Norwood while obtaining her Ohio Teaching License and is now a fourth grade teacher at Immaculate Conception Academy in Norwood. Val is the newly elected PTA President at Norwood View. She is a member of several local groups including the Norwood Alumni Association and the Norwood Wellness Group. She is the founder and President of the Norwood Community Orchestra and enjoys playing the violin alongside her friends and neighbors. In the past, Val has served as the Co-Chair on the Norwood Police Department Citizen’s Advisory Council. At the state level Val is a member of the Ohio PTA and Ohio Women in Government. Each of these roles show her ability to work as a leader on the behalf of others.
Val continues to see immense potential within the city of Norwood despite our major financial setbacks. A fiscally responsible Norwood is, again, at the forefront of Val’s campaign. Media coverage of our city’s financial woes means that each and every citizen in Norwood now has the information they need to make smart decisions on who they elect. She believes transparency is key to maintaining an independent Norwood.
With the revenue from the new developments over the past several years, she would like to see a surplus in the budget so as to offer more opportunities to the community. She believes we need steady resources to support our City Departments. Val plans to encourage and seek out grant opportunities. A few examples of her goals include supporting the Recreation Center so that it can offer more and varied programming for all residents; implementing beautification projects; and promoting further efforts in the renovating the city-owned parks, buildings, streets, and sidewalks.
Additionally, Val has a strong desire to see the return of small businesses to Montgomery Road and throughout our neighbohoods. Norwood has done well getting large businesses in to the city, but what about all of the empty buildings and deteriorating storefronts we pass each day? Norwood residents can all remember a time when there were successful family-owned shops on Montgomery Road and corner stores in our neighborhoods. Residents have heard tell of the glory days of the Pike, or perhaps remember firsthand the good ol’ days. Times have changed and changed again. Other local communities with small businesses and individually-owned shops are thriving. Now it’s time for the Gem of the Highlands to shine!
Val recognizes the task at hand is challenging, but she has a heart for this city and the determination to get the job done.
